{ MOTHERHOOD : CORNWALL } A PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

{MOTHERHOOD CORNWALL }

FOLLOWING A GROUP OF WOMEN IN CORNWALL THROUGHOUT THEIR PREGNANCIES , BIRTH , AND THE FIRST YEAR OF MOTHERHOOD WITH THEIR BABIES.

I have started this personal project as an artistic way of looking at and celebrating both the journeys women make as they navigate through motherhood, and also our maternity & birth services in Cornwall.

I have photographed births all over the country, and I truly do believe we have exceptional maternity services here in Cornwall. I am constantly in awe of the fact that though I have seen beautiful birth rooms, state of the art equipment, and lovely midwives all over the country, that our services in Cornwall ( though in comparison to some, are much less funded ) are generally, I believe, exceptional .

There is an ever growing network of women working in the Cornish community , supporting women through preconception, their pregnancies and early days of their babies’ lives, to make the journey as calm, healing, positive, and beautiful as it has the potential to be. From hypnobirthing, to doulas, to menstruality mentors, independent midwives, pregnancy pilates, yoga and ballet classes, exercise classes for mums with babies in baby slings, positive birth movement groups, to groups supporting young mums. Their is a collective movement it seems within the county to raise each other up and celebrate all of our journeys, and that is a beautiful thing to witness.

The fact we are actively encouraged in our home births, is brilliant, the fact that gentle csections are pretty much just ‘the norm’ now in cornwall is also wonderful & quite honestly, nothing short of exceptional, and now with two birth centres in the county, and Penrice reopening 24 hours a day (whilst many birth centres across the UK are closing), it feels like huge progress is being made, even when we feel there is so much more to achieve. These things make such a huge contribution to our journeys as mothers, and how we navigate our child(rens) first years on earth . I also know that unless you know lots of people who have delivered outside of cornwall , we don’t realise, how different and forward our maternity care/services really are in comparison to a lot of the rest of the country.

I am very interested in how we as a county of mothers navigate our pregnancies , births, feeding and mothering journeys. I find the whole gentle parenting movement that is being so widely embraced in cornwall , so encouraging and exciting, & I wish to document what I see as a beautiful progression of parenting.

I also want to show all the different approaches to pregnancy , birthing and mothering, and how they all are worthy of documentation, all the journeys we take are beautiful & unique and deserve to be recorded for future generations. That birth photography isn’t just water births with candles and whale music, and c-sections are not, despite what the media would have you believe; opting for an “easy option” , medicalised & lacking in beautiful moments. I believe all of these births, their variations, and the millions of in-betweens deserve to be documented as equally valid and important as each other.

It is my intention to see how the project grows, and how I as an artist grow from the experience as well . I believe that personal projects are integral to photographers remaining above all, artists and that the growth that comes from photographing for arts sake is invaluable.

Welcome.

xoxo
